Shakespeare’s Sonnets talk of the Dark Lady and it is believed that Mary Fitton who lived at Gawsworth Hall and was the younger daughter of Sir Edward and Lady Alice Fitton, could well be Shakespeare’s Dark Lady. A resident of Gawsworth Hall was Samuel Johnson, Britain’s last professional jester. His violin is now displayed in the dining room and Samual was buried in “Maggoty Johnson’s Wood”.
