Liverpool Town Hall can date its origins back to 1207, but the structure and the character of the building as it appears today has been largely down to the work of John Wood and was completed in 1754. John Wood (The Elder) was one of the leading architects of his generation and who’s most notable designs include the Circus and Queens Square in Bath. In fact, many of his designs from the early years of his career were concentrated in Baths and the North Somerset region. In fact, it is surprising and notable that Liverpool Town Hall is really the only remaining significant piece of architecture outside of the local region that remains by John Wood, it is a highly important building in historical architectural terms both for Liverpool and the nation as a whole.
It is not, however, common knowledge that Liverpool Town Hall was initially designed for wedding ceremonies to take place. In 1505, the first Liverpool Town Hall was constructed and this was designed specifically for performances and wedding ceremonies. The current Liverpool Town Hall has survived the ravages of time and treason and stands today as one of the finest locations for a wedding in the area.
